Indiana's winters can be cold and harsh. There are several things that can be done to lessen the chance of frozen or burst pipes when the temperatures get cold.
Learning where your water shut off valve is and how to use it will help you respond quicker if a pipe breaks during cold weather.
Disconnecting the water hose from the outdoor faucet not only protects the water hose from being damaged by ice build up, it can aid in preventing ice from forming in the outdoor faucet. You should also turn off the water to your outdoor faucets (if you have a separate outdoor shut-off valve) or wrap outside faucets and hose bibs with insulation.
Insulate pipes using pipe insulation tubing or pipe insulation wrap. This should be done in all unheated areas, such as attics, crawl spaces, and basements. Caulk around pipes where they enter the home to reduce air leaks.
Close foundation vents (if not automatic). You can fill vent openings with a fitted piece of wood or foam board if needed. Doing so will help to prevent cold air from blowing into the crawl space.
If you leave home for several days, instead of turning off your furnace, set your thermostat to a lower setting. This may not prevent freezing pipes, but it can help.
Let your faucets drip. Turning on your faucets to a slight drip will help keep water flowing, reducing the risk of freezing. It also helps to protect from a burst pipe if the water does freeze by preventing pressure from building up between the faucet and the ice formation.
Don't panic. If you're faced with a broken, burst, or frozen water pipe; contact a plumber for repair work. Repairing broken pipes on the customer's side of the meter is the property owner's responsibility.
We stay in constant communication with our customers until the job is done. To get a quote, or if you have questions or special requests, just drop us a line.
